1

The seven areas of learning

The EYFS has three prime areas, which are especially important in the early years, and four specific areas that build on them.

  • Prime: Communication and language
  • Prime: Physical development
  • Prime: Personal, social and emotional development
  • Specific: Literacy
  • Specific: Mathematics
  • Specific: Understanding the world
  • Specific: Expressive arts and design
2

Learning through play

The EYFS isn't about worksheets. Children learn by playing, exploring, being active, and thinking creatively. Staff plan activities around each child's interests and next steps.

3

Progress checks

Between ages 2 and 3, your nursery will give you a written progress check covering the prime areas. Many settings also share regular observations through an app or learning journal.
